Famous Ayers Rock is a large sandstone rock formation in the southern part of the Northern Territory, standing 348 metres high with most of its bulk located below the earth’s surface. It is located 440 kilometres south-west of Alice Springs in the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. The area around Ayers Rock is home to an abundance of springs, waterholes, ancient paintings and rock caves. Depending on the time of day, the position of the sun promotes spectacular colour changes, from shades of brilliant red, mauve, blues, pinks and brown – most notably at dawn and sunset.
