6 Original Melbourne Date Ideas

Make the most of every minute with these unique date ideas!

Melbourne is packed with bars and restaurants that make a great place for a date, but sometimes you just want to do something a little bit different to crank up the special factor. Here are 6 ideas for a date in Melbourne that are a little out of the ordinary!

1. GET CREATIVE AT THE PUB

The pub is a typical date joint, but how about throwing in a canvas, brushes and some vibrant paints? Life with Paint run social painting events; just book online, turn up, and paint the night away. It doesn’t matter if you haven’t held a brush since pre-school, the night is all about having fun, being social and getting a little bit creative – a great place to get to know your date.
There are various locations across the city, plenty of designs to recreate, and you can keep a drink in hand throughout!

2. ROW YOUR WAY TO ROMANCE

For an active date with a touch of romance, pack a picnic full of treats and head down to Studley Park to hire a rowing boat. Dabble on the water for a while, enjoying the peace of the river and the twitter of birds.
If you have a spare hour after your watery adventure, stroll along the flower lined Bushland Circuit Track and head for the Bellbird Picnic area to marvel at the thousands of flying foxes relaxing in the sun.

3. DANCE TILL YOU BOTH DROP

Spice up your relationship with free Latin dance classes at Ms Collins Latin American Thursdays. Learn to Bachata and Salsa with your beau whilst enjoying some themed cuisine and cocktails. We recommend ‘Pinkies Reviver’ for a drink that will keep you dancing ‘til the morning! Ms Collins is located on Collins Street in the CBD and dancing starts at 8pm.

4. INDULGE IN A TOUCH OF STAR GAZING

If you’ve splashed out on dinner in the city but the night isn’t over, how about strolling into the Royal Botanic Gardens and visiting the Melbourne Observatory where you can learn about the cosmos and gaze at the stars together.
If you’re in the area during the day, treat your date to high tea at The Terrace and a punt cruise on Ornamental Lake, turning a much loved location into something truly special.

5. A LITTLE BIT CHEESY

Nothing quite excites the tastebuds like cheese and wine, and Milk the Cow know the perfect combinations. From decedent fondues to pairing the perfect cheeses with boutique booze, signature cocktails and unique gelato, this little slice of heaven is sure to impress.
If you’re south of the river, the St. Kilda restaurant will take care of you. When you’re all cheesed out, take a romantic stroll along the pier where you may even meet some little penguins, returning home from the sea for a snuggle after a long day fishing.

6. RIDE INTO THE SUNSET

The Melbourne Bike Share Scheme is a great way to explore the city together. Hop on your blue cruisers at the Fitzroy Street station in St Kilda, grabbing an ice-cream from Fritz Gelato across the street. Head through Catani Gardens and turn right to reach Beaconsfield Parade. Take the dedicated bicycle path and meander your way to Port Melbourne along the beach. If you feel you’ve worked off your ice-cream, Gelato Sensation on Victoria Avenue is another great pit stop for an iced coffee, gelato or even Belgian waffles! The full route is a flat 5km, and you can ride side-by-side enjoying a chat in the sunshine.
