- Good value for moneyWe got a deal through Travelzoo for a family room (2 bedrooms + large living space and kitchen) for $125/night. I would highly recommend this hotel for… a similar deal if you can find one. It is definitely an older building which shows in some corners but its location to town and comfortable beds make up for any short comings. Parking at the Ibis is limited to only a few spots and we had to take our chances with street parking. Staff were friendly and helpful. Bathroom had no fan or window. Air con in the main rooms worked well though. Rooms only have one key but you can leave it at reception if necessary. Our deal included a continental breakfast and we could opt to pay extra for the cooked food. We appreciated the selection of croissants and cereals but did not upgrade to include the cooked portion and I'm glad we didn't. It was a simple selection of scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, and potatoes sitting in metal containers under a heat lamp. There are plenty of affordable eateries nearby to choose from for a substantial meal if you so wish.
- Got everything you need, but customer service is inconsistentWe recently got back from a holiday in Cairns, and we stayed in Ibis all throughout the weekend. We arrived early in the morning, so we dropped our bags… in Ibis and went for a roam. We returned at 1pm in time for the 2pm check in schedule just in case a room was available ahead of time, but the sullen lady at the reception said we needed to pay $10 to check in an hour early - so we said "Alright," and sat down to wait. After a few minutes, a couple arrived and checked in, and they went through without paying up. My husband and I looked at each other and knew there was something terribly wrong. So he went up to reception and asked what's the deal, and all of a sudden a room was available! We wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt but it was a challenge considering her sour attitude. Good thing the night receptionist was the complete opposite - helpful and empathetic. Thanks Paula for all your help! As for the room - it was sufficient. The bed was comfortable, room was spacious and the bathroom had basic amenities that were regularly replenished. It also had a kitchen, microwave and fridge - so it was almost like a mini apartment unit. It was also remarkable how quiet the room was, considering the hotel was busy. We had a good night's sleep all weekend. Continental breakfast was free on our package, but some guests had to pay separately. There's also an option to upgrade to a hot meal for $11. We considered doing that but we saw that the continental range was more than enough, so there was no need to do so. There was choices of cereal, congee, toast, muffins, and croissant. It would have been much better though if the breakfast lady was more cheeful - she was consistently dour in her demeanor and never smiled for anyone (maybe she's friends with the receptionist?). We're just glad that we met a sunnier breakfast lady on our last day. To sum - Ibis is good value for money, close to everything important, and offers basic conveniences. The staff is a mixed bag, so bring some patience with you just in case.
- Best place to stayHave stayed here two years running now, can't fault it, reasonable price, comfortable, clean, friendly staff. After spending a couple of weeks on the… road it is a welcome place to stay, has a laundry, pool and great breakfast buffet. Easy to walk to everything, good location. Don't look past this place, recommend it highly.
